Single-unit neurophysiology and human psychophysics have begun to reveal distinct neural mechanisms for processing visual stimuli defined by differences in contrast or texture (second-order motion) rather than by luminance (first-order motion). This processing begins in early visual cortical areas, with subsequent extrastriate specialization, and may provide a basis for form-cue invariant analyses of image structure, such as figure-ground segregation and detection of illusory contours.  相似文献

The precise identification of the digits of the avian wing is of importance in evolutionary studies. If the digits are numbered two, three and four, this has been taken to suggest that birds are not descended directly from dinosaurs. If the digits are numbered one, two and three, dinosaur origins become more plausible. Studies of the development of the avian wing have failed to resolve this dilemma. However, in some instances, it is possible to deduce information about evolutionary morphologies by manipulating development experimentally. We grafted beads loaded with fibroblast growth factor 4 into the distal tip of chick wing buds at times when the apical ectodermal ridge is regressing. The consequence was that the cartilage structure conventionally labelled ''element 5'' increased dramatically in size and acquired a digit-like morphology in some instances. Corresponding changes in soft tissue morphology were also observed. We conclude that it may be possible to resolve the issue of avian digit homology by the induction of experimental atavisms of this kind.  相似文献

Anthers of Vitis latifolia L. (wild grape) cultured on Nitsch and Nitsch medium supplemented with 20 μM 2,4-D and 9 μM BAP produced callus after 4–6 weeks. Subculture of callus onto Nitsch and Nitsch medium containing 10 μM NAA produced somatic embryos within 6 weeks. On growth regulator-free Nitsch and Nitsch basal medium somatic embryos converted to plantlets in 6–8 weeks. One gram of callus produced more than 400 somatic embryos with 13.7% being converted to complete plantlets, which were subsequently established in soil. Endocrine tumor (ET) can produce and secrete hormones to a variable degree. These neoplasms present a diagnostic challenge, both clinically and radiologically. ET is classified as either syndromic or nonsyndromic on the basis of their clinical manifestations, as differentiated and undifferentiated according to their histological patterns and as pancreatic or extra-pancreatic. Multi-detector row computed tomography (CT) plays an important role in the diagnosis and staging of these lesions. In general, syndromic ET are less than 3 cm in size. They are typically hyperenhancing on CT scans during arterial phase. Nonsyndromic ET tend to be larger than syndromic one and are more likely heterogeneous. Detection of pancreatic localisation and staging of hepatic metastasis could benefit to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Endoscopic ultrasound and somatostatin receptor scintigraphy are the two main tools for diagnosis and staging ET. This work presents the role of imaging in the staging and the treatment of these patients.  相似文献
